Stroke Standards & Tips
Freestyle:
- Staying on the surface: Swimmers must stay on the surface of the water throughout the race.
- Proper finish: Swimmers must touch the wall with any part of their body at the end of the race.
Backstroke:
- Backstroke start: Begin the race in a backstroke position; swimmers must not push off on their stomach.
- Maintaining backstroke: Swimmers must keep their strokes in the backstroke style throughout the race.
- Proper turn: Swimmers must perform a backstroke turn, not roll onto the breast.
Breaststroke:
- Symmetrical arm stroke: Arms must move together in a circular motion. One arm only or an underwater pull-out is not allowed.
- Proper kick: Swimmers should use the frog or whip kick, keeping legs within the body’s frame.
- Simultaneous touch: Both hands must touch the wall at the same time during each turn and at the finish.
Butterfly:
- Simultaneous arm stroke: Both arms must move together during the stroke. One arm pulling is not allowed.
- Dolphin kick: Swimmers must kick both legs simultaneously in a dolphin style.
- Simultaneous touch: Both hands must touch the wall together at the end of the race.
Relay Race:
- Legal take-off: Swimmers must wait for the previous swimmer to touch the wall before starting.
- Exchange within the zone: Relay exchanges must occur within the designated exchange zone.
